Asia Argento is an Italian actress and film maker born into a large family. She has pursued both professions herself. She made her film debut at age nine in Sergio Citti's Sogni bisogni. At the age of eighteen she had become the main character of Cristina Comencini's Zoo and part of Michele's The Church. She played Nanni's daughter the next year in Red Wood Pigeon. It was her career that really began to take off after Close Friends, written and directed Michele Placido. Cannes International Film Festival received the movie well. Daria Nicholodi was among the most beloved actresses of Argento and performed the part of an orexic kid looking for the killer. Asia was a part of Dario's Phantom of the Opera, the third film she directed together with her father. Two of them were Trauma and The Stendhal Syndrome. Her role as Arianna in Carlo Verdone's Perdiamoci di the vista, a physically handicapped girl, was an arduous and complex role that won her the David di Donatello award as the most outstanding actor. Her film debut was a role on the screen in Queen Margot, directed by Patrice Cereau. She was a part of Peter Del Monte's Compagna di viaggio with Michel Piccoli in which she was awarded the David di Donatello award as well as the Grolla of Oro. Asia took up the profession of directing in 1994 and produced two shorts and an episode from De Generazione. The following year, in 1996, Asia made a document about her father. And, finally, 1998 was the year that Asia created a feature-length film on Abel Ferrara (AbelAsia), that was awarded an award by the Rome Film Festival. In 1999, Asia was the first to direct a feature film by directing Scarlet Diva in which she played the lead actor and wrote the screenplay. In May 2000, the movie was screened across the globe. It won the Brooklyn's special prize at the Williamsburg festival of film.
